Tradition Five

Jalapenos, dill, and a rouge carrot from last years seeds!
Yesterday was a good day. I worked in the garden, getting my hands dirty! Here are some photos of what I harvested and planted, as well as my helpers.

I'm still working on getting acquainted with the Traditions in the Al-Anon program and how I can apply them to my life. So it is nice to come across two helpful reminders this morning. First the page I opened in Courage to Change on page 42 shared this:

"Tradition Five helps me to set three goals: to work the steps for myself; to have compassion for the alcoholics; and to have compassion for those who come to Al-Anon. What strikes me is the amount of love to be found in these three goals. First, I love myself enough to try to heal and grow by working Steps. Next, I call upon this strength to love those people I once thought were my enemies, recognizing that they too were struggling to cope with this terrible disease. Finally, I draw upon these experiences and extend love to those who are following a similar journey - the families and friends of alcoholics.

I know that I was pulled from despair by the love of strangers who quickly became friends. Now I have enough love and wholeness within myself to share it with others who suffer from the effects of alcoholism.

Today's Reminder:
I needed love before I even knew what it was. Now that I understand something about it. I need it even more. By loving myself, I not only take care of my own needs, but I lay a foundation for loving others. By loving others, I learn to treat myself well.

'Each Al-Anon Family Group has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps of AA ourselves, by encouraging and understanding our alcoholic relatives, and by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics.' Tradition Five

The second reminder I came across a Forum Favorites that provided a "Short Version of the Twelve Traditions."

1. All for one - one for All.
2. We have but one boss - a loving God.
3. Relatives of alcoholics help others to help themselves.
4. We run our own affairs - that is enough for most of us.
5. We have but one purpose - that's a full time job.
6. We tend to our own business.
7. We pay our own way.
8. We hire people to do thing we cannot do.
9. We don't organize but we make some arrangements.
10. We stay out of squabbles - we might fight dirty.
11. We let people know we exist - politely and in good taste.
12. Anonymity is our cloak of protection; it protects us - it does not hide us.

You can find the "full" version of the Twelve Traditions on the Al-Anon Family Groups website.

I want to remember that when I keep things simple, life is much more enjoyable and easier for me. Today I will remember and apply compassion for others that are around me, while running and tending to my own affairs. Most importantly, today I need to stay out of squabbles by keeping my mouth shut and my body language neutral.

Hope you have a nice Sunday treating yourself well.
